Last October I had the chance to visit a friend in Positano Italy where he and his family owned an operated a restaurant up the hill in Monterpetuso.
We were only able to carry a limited ammount of gear when traveling across the world, so we did this piece with minimal equipment. Needless to say it came out wonderful. Not just because the story is so genuine and beautiful, but because the Amalfi coast is such an incredible place with a rich history and intriguing beauty.
I'd been trying to take a camping/hiking/backpacking trip with my dad for about a year. Finally we found time when both our schedules would work together and got out to the desert to do some "outdoorsy" type things.
I've always made short films of stuff like this, nothing that anyone would find all that interesting. I've also always written piece when I'm out doing things like this. I've never really had the energy or interest in putting the two together, but for this trip I felt like it could work well.
Music is: Ben Howard, Civil Wars, and American Football.
My Friends Are Talented Series:
“He who works with his hands is a laborer.
He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.
He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.” -St. Francis of Assisi
Mikey Ambrose is one of those frustratingly talented people. I've been watching him play music, be in bands and play drums for over a decade now and every time I see him play he blows my mind again. I am always floored by what this guy can do with two sticks and a couple of feet.
Then came the day I figured out that Mikey had moved on to different things. I remember the first time I saw one of his furniture pieces and I thought to myself. "Mikey? Ambrose? Woodworking? Someone explain to me."
Our mutual friend Kyle bought a beautiful side table piece and we chatted about how cool it is to watch someone like Mikey make a move from one skill or interest to a completely different one and then be awesome enough to make a living doing so.
He's created a business that allows him to get whatever he wants out of life. He wants to play drums? He does. He wants to hike and find wood? He does. He wants to take a month off and go to England? He does. He isn't a laborer or a craftsman. He is most certainly an artist.
“It isn't what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing, that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.”
― Dale Carnegie
"A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand" - author unknown
Something about the simple gesture of baking can say a lot about how much someone cares for you. Even if you don't care for sweets, there is something to be said for a handcrafted gift who's sole purpose is to make you smile.
Each scoop perfectly measured, every turn of a whisk, every grain of salt, every minute spent in the oven, all measured in anticipation of your enjoyment.
Whether baking for an open house in her professional world, encouraging the team of boys she water polo coaches, celebrating birthdays or occasions, Amy shares her love in cookies, and as two folks that love Amy in return, we are not complaining.
"I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me-like food or water." - Ray Charles
This is Aaron O'neil. He's an insanely nice guy and he's an insanely talented drummer. Come to think of it, he comes from a family of insanely nice and talented musicians. He's grown up with music and we've pretty much watched him grow up. From the start, his talent for drumming and his passion for music has always impressed us and has continued to inspire us over the years.
Aaron currently lives in Washington, plays in at least 3 bands and spends most of the year on tour.

"All photographs are memento mori. To take a photograph is to participate in another person's (or thing's) mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time's relentless melt." -Susan Sontag
This is Nate Skinner. He spends 8 hours a day in a lab as a bio-chemist. He fills every other available moment of his life exploring, framing and photographing the world around him.
Watching this film, we can't help but get a little bit choked up because we know how dedicated and talented Nate is at his craft - and at this point we want it as badly as he does. His passion is inspiring and contagious. His photographs are many. His longing for something more is relate-able and his urge to become the best possible version of himself is something all of us should strive for.

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” -Barack Obama
This is one part in a series of pieces that we will be doing on those that we surround ourselves with. We know some pretty amazing people with some incredible passions and we want to showcase those. The trick is getting our friends to understand or believe that what they love is interesting to others.
I'm always fascinated by what those around me are capable of, and I just wanted to be able to share this.

This is the piece is entitled "Catching Up". It's about riding. It's about routine, it's about heartache, and it's about reclaiming that which you love most in life. I'm proud that I know someone so dedicated, and passionate about his craft that he spends 6 days a week, and countless hours a day perfecting what he does.
He rides on a team, he rides in races, he wins races, he places in races. He is one of the most dedicated and professional people I know when it comes to riding. I had the chance to be out on a ride with him (even if I am in a car), and what he is able to do with his machine is more impressive than I would've thought.

This is the first piece entitled "90 Feet of Perfection". It's about baseball. It's about playing, it's about living, and it's about loving the game that is larger than life. I'm proud that I have a friend who's knowledge, and interest is so indepth and so widespread about this topic.
He writes a baseball blog called "90 Feet of Perfection" and does a great deal of postings on interesting topics (especially if you're a fan of Pacific Coast League, and West Coast baseball). So stop with the ESPN East Coast bias and read some great stuff from a great guy who just wants to play.

This is Audrey Watson. She'll talk your ear off, she'll laugh your face off, she'll dance your pants off and she'll have more energy and enthusiasm than you can ever imagine.
That's pretty much her philosophy on life. And she applies it to everything she does.
This is what she's doing now. This is what she wants to do for the future. This is where she has found her place, and we think it's perfect for her.

Thoughts On Series:
I can't believe how far our family has come in the last four or five years. It seems like the me of the past is a lifetime away from where I am now. I've grown in ways I never thought I would've been able to. Now, knocking on the door of being a father of two boys, I'm starting to reflect on where I've been, and more importantly, where I am going. Wear Sunglasses.... The future Is Bright.
My son has been on this earth for an entire trip around the Sun. Coincidentally, it also has felt like the fastest year in my life. Does it every slow down? I'm guessing not.
Here we go!!!
I'm still coping with becoming a father. It's a brand new experiences with its inevitable pitfalls and extreme high points. However, this road to being comfortable with being a father has been long and treacherous.
This was a piece I had written about becoming a dad. We filmed some pieces with our first born son and I built something around the writing
A visual representation of a written piece of work about turning thirty. The fears, and the power behind one of the more important birthday's of your life.
I just turned 30, and spent a very long weekend reflecting and deciding about where I want to be, and what I want to do, and well. This is what came from it.
My wife and I shot the piece, I wrote it. I cut it, I colored it, I wrote the music, and I did the voice over. It's very autobiographical.
Shot on the 5D Mark II. I used and intervalometer, and a 24mm prime lense for most of it.
Thoughts From: Series, written work put to visual.

We need to tear down the walls that divide us. Understand each other. Listen carefully and form opinions based on personal perception. We need faith in each other and to not be derailed by anger, fear and hate.

In 2007 3 file boxes containing roughly 30,000 negatives are discovered at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, Ca. In the 3 boxes is Surfing's History from 1972-1993. I traveled for 3+ years finding the people as well as the photographers who lived the era and captured beautiful stories if not TOLD would be LOST.
